Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to do to prepare for my first appointment?

It's best to be well hydrated and use gentle exfoliation several days before your first appointment. If your skin is dehydrated, it tends to hold onto the hair which can result in breakage rather than complete removal from the root. Don't forget to chill out! The more tense you are, the more pain you experience. It has been our experience that taking an over the counter analgesic 45 minutes before your appointment will alleviate some pain.  Refraining from alcohol and caffeine is always a good idea as well.
Sugar Me Silky requires that every client fill out our comprehensive electronic consent form before their first appointment. You will find the link to the form in your welcome email.

How long does sugaring last?

You have three different hair growth cycles that are each approximately 10 days long so, we recommend consistently sugaring every 4 weeks. Please be aware that you may not be 100% smooth the very first time you wax. Because of the different hair growth cycles, your hair may grow back "patchy". The more consistent you are, the smoother you'll be. There are many benefits to maintaining a regular hair removal cycle. Sugaring regularly will cause the hair to grow back finer, thinner, and more sparse.

Does sugaring hurt? Can I reduce the pain?

We do our best to make your experience as pain free as possible. Here are some tips to help minimize the pain:
---Be consistent. This results in a less painful wax. Get on a consistent schedule and stick to it! Year-round is ideal.
---Try to avoid caffeine before your appointment. Caffeine is a stimulant and can make your skin more sensitive.
---Exfoliate before you come in.
---Invest in a great numbing cream, it really will take the edge off!
---The second appointment is less painful than the first and gets easier each time you come in (if you are still worried about the pain, ask your aesthetician about No Scream Cream, a topical cream that numbs the area and reduces the pain by 50-80%).
---We also suggest scheduling your first appointment right after your period. Your pain threshold is higher during that time, and you'll be more comfortable.
---Stop shaving! We like you to come to see us about two weeks after your last shave because shaving can make the hair more resistant to wax.

How long after sugaring can I have sexual intercourse? Are there any activities I should avoid?

Your hair follicles will be open for up to 24 hours after sugaring and during this time, you will want to avoid sexual intercourse, swimming pools, hot tubs, and rigorous exercise to limit sweating and skin irritation. Your skin may also be more sensitive.  If your skin feels extremely irritated or is painful to the touch after the first day, it’s best to contact us and speak with your esthetician about the symptoms you are experiencing.  All of our estheticians are highly trained in skincare and will be able to assist you. It is imperative to protect any freshly sugared skin from sun exposure.

Uh Oh! It's the day of my Brazilian appointment and I started my period. What should I do?

Be prepared that hair removal may be more painful if you're on your period. If you are not shy, we have no problem sugaring you, providing proper hygiene has been exercised.

How early should I arrive for my appointment?

No need to be extra early for your appointment! Arrive about five minutes early to your first appointment, just in case you need to use the restroom or if you need to fill out your online consent form, to be ready for your esthetician at the start of your appointment! As a returning client, you are able to arrive right on time, but you can arrive early and wait until your appointment time in our lovely waiting rooms and use the restroom or grab some water before your appointment time arrives. If you are running late, we have a grace period of 10 minutes, if you are later than 10 minutes, we can help you get rescheduled.

I've heard of the sugaring technique, but I do not know the difference between that and regular waxing. How is it different?

Sugaring is an all-natural hair removal method. Sugar is a paste made of sugar, citric acid, and water. The technique and application are more advanced.

What is the ideal hair length my hair should be prior to sugaring?

Sugaring allows us to get hair that is shorter, therefore we advise 1/4 of an inch of hair growth or 7-10 days of hair growth after shaving. Please be aware that thinner hair hurts less. Your esthetician will decide if your hair is too short, and may ask to reschedule your appointment for a few days later to let the hair grow out.

How do I care for my skin after my sugaring appointment?

Within the first 24 hours of your appointment gently cleanse the area and rinse with lukewarm water. Try to avoid lotions or oils to prevent ingrown hairs. After 24 hours, we advise gentle exfoliation (with emphasis on the gentle). As this is practiced daily, the likelihood of various skin irritations may be greatly reduced. It has been our experience that combining mechanical and chemical exfoliation provides the best results. Please ask your esthetician to educate you about which products may be best for your skin type!

Is there anyone who should not get sugared?

If you are on medication that increases your skin's photosensitivity, you may not be a good candidate for sugaring. If you are using Retin-A or retinol products on your skin, discontinue the use of these products 3-5 days before your appointment. Clients taking the oral prescription Accutane should wait 12 months before sugaring.
